PRP and Stem Cells Q & A
What is regenerative therapy?
Regenerative therapy involves giving your body a boost to help it regenerate new cells and tissues. The two main types of regenerative therapy are:
- Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy
- Stem cell therapy
These modern therapies can help you heal and recover as quickly as possible, while minimizing pain and inflammation. Treatments involve injecting powerful, naturally occuring healing cells into your treatment area either after an injury, after surgery, or to help with a chronic degenerative condition, such as arthritis.
Where do PRP and stem cells come from?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell therapy utilize cells found in your own body. But you can opt for donor stem cells, too. Each therapy is described below.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)
Platelet-rich plasma injections utilize the powerful growth factors you already have in your body. When you have an injury, platelets in your blood target the area to promote clotting and tissue healing. One of the reasons this is possible is because of growth factors, which are specialized proteins attached to platelets.
A PRP treatment involves drawing a small amount of your blood and spinning it in a centrifuge. This machine helps separate platelet concentration, and thus, growth factor concentration. Once your PRP is processed, it’s simply injected directly into your treatment area.
Stem cell therapy
Stem cell therapy works in a similar manner as PRP, but instead of growth factors, you’re getting stem cells to stimulate healing. At Sohail Shayfer, MD Inc., you can choose from umbilical cord donor cells or autologous cells from your own body.
With donor cells, Dr. Shayfer injects them directly into your injured area. If using your own stem cells is a better option for you, Dr. Shayfer needs to harvest them from one of your bones, often from the hip. Once he extracts them with a needle — you’re numbed and relaxed during the process — all he has to do is inject your stem cells where they need to go.
When do PRP and stem cells start working?
It can take up to 2-3 weeks to start noticing an improvement. Dr. Shayfer finds that some men and women have continuing pain and inflammation shortly after a PRP or stem cell therapy treatment. This is normal and just a side effect of the initial injection.
Once you start experiencing a reduction in pain and inflammation, you can expect continuing improvements over the following weeks or months. You’re probably going to have a dramatic improvement after a single treatment, although for optimal pain and inflammation relief, Dr. Shayfer could recommend 2-3 PRP or stem cell sessions.
